Helen Durrant from Parkstone Golf Club is one step closer to a round of a lifetime with a European Tour star after beating thousands of amateur golfers across England to make the final stage of the Bridgestone Chase Your Dream Trophy and become England Golf’s Female Handicapper of the Year.
The 49-year-old kept alive her dream of a place in the pro-am of the British Masters supported by Sky Sports by qualifying from England Golf Week at Frilford Heath Golf – being one of just nine finalists to do so from a field of 60.
The competition, organised by England Golf, began way back in the spring and ever since a host of regional events took place, Helen has been on a journey with Bridgestone to the top of the sport.
Helen is now only one round away from once-in-a-lifetime opportunity playing with a professional at the British Masters supported by Sky Sports at Walton Heath in October – but must first be a part of the winning team in the Bridgestone Challenge.
The Chase Your Dream Trophy continues to capture the imaginations of thousands of amateur golfers in clubs affiliated to England Golf, just as it did in its inaugural year 12 months ago.
In 2017, the three overall winners partnered Ryder Cup hero Nicolas Colsaerts at the pro-am of the British Masters supported by Sky Sports at Close House.
Helen, who scored a net 70 on the Oxfordshire course, was over the moon to win the Chase Your Dream Trophy and get the title of ‘Female Handicappers of the Year’: “I can’t stop smiling. I just can’t believe that I’ve finished in first place in an incredibly strong field.
“I won my regional round and now I’ve finished top in the round of the tournament. Hopefully I can continue my form at Luton Hoo!”
The 24 handicapper overcame a painful injury to even start playing golf: “I just to be a gymnast and never thought I’d start golf. I then damaged my back and knew my gymnastic days were over.
“I picked up a golf club and I was hooked. I never expected anything like this though!
“My son is playing off a single figure handicap, my aim to get down low enough to beat him.”
Bridgestone’s Consumer Sales & Marketing Director, Farrell Dolan said: “Helen has done fantastically to qualify for the next round against a strong field of golfers from across the country. She’ll continue to chase her dream of playing at the British Masters supported by Sky Sports.
“Our Chase Your Dream Trophy has captured the imaginations of many, many golfers. We’re now only one step away from the British Masters and nine amateur golfers are continuing to live their dreams – including Helen.”
